Yu Yan Cheng
For my project, I want to make a series of illustrations on photos. In each photo, the idea will be the same, which is the feeling of being watched. When I was younger, my sister would search for horror stories and read them to me. Although I enjoy watching and listening to scary movies and stories, sometimes the creepy feelings will bother me at a moment of time. The similarity of those stories is that something is always watching you from the darkest corner. Those stories had been following me even till today. Especially at a younger age I had to perform in an orchestra and alone with people watching me from the darkness. Each photo will be taken with a phone and will have digital drawing included. In this project, the illustration may or may not be understood by the audiences, but to me it is what brings out those memories from the past.
Yu Yan Cheng is a student at University of Victoria. She is currently studying Major in Visual Arts and will finish her study in the year of 2023.
She is currently studying photography, video art and extended media practice. The different kinds of practice allow her to gain interest in illustration on photo, creating her own soundtracks which she will continue to work on. She also works on her skills on taking photographs of the city, and nature and she likes to find beauty in everyday life. With her video art practice, she is learning and using different skills to create more and better videos. She also enjoys learning extended media art which uses different equipment to create artwork, and experiment with video art.
With the continuation of her art practice, she likes to gain experiences with more exhibitions and to learn more from other artists/peers to improve herself.
