Roshini Morrison

Observer is a large photographic ink jet print, mounted on dibond. This work explores moments of time found in a constant environment and how individually, people observe and insert themselves into those spaces. The piece has peephole-like spaces laid out in a grid format with a lot of black negative space between them. Each individual image depicts a different moment in time and the negative space is meant to represent the feeling of time passing, and of moments that may have been missed. There are also individual images that have been altered or fictionalized, and while they further alter these spaces, they also evoke more thought around truth, narrative, and ethics in relation to photography.

This work leads viewers to question their role in their environments and how at any given moment they can be the observed, the observer, or both, and what that means for them within these spaces and in these moments in time.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Roshini Morrison is a multimedia artist working with photography, video, and sculpture. Nature is where she thrives and finds inspiration. Her practice focuses on the environment, the natural elements within those environments, and human interaction with those spaces. Using photography and video as primary mediums, she balances documenting reality and altering it just enough to draw people’s attention to things normally overlooked. There is always a conversation about the responsibility to convey truth in art, but art is also powerful in its ability to bring attention to truths through forceful and often faked or altered visual realities. This is what Roshini explores in her practice.
