Kyndra Burton

Untitled (Cyanotype gowns), 2021, explores a woman's identity through the lens of what medical professionals call the "social determinates of health". The hospital gowns are made from cotton fabric and hand-sewn by my mother. They were then treated with light-sensitive cyanotype photo chemicals and processed under UV light. On each gown is personal information collected from my mother, younger sister and grandmother respectively. The work resists the urge to fabricate emotional visuals and instead opts for text-based data. The inquiry into the medical field is not a new subject for me, as my mother, aunt, sister and multiple cousins work in the medical field. Autonomy and body objectivity was an important theme I was raised with, and by representing my mother, grandmother and sister through these gowns, I have simultaneously given their identities an unbiased voice and stripped away their privacy. The work attempts to destigmatize women's health while uncovering the invasive nature of medical questions women are pressured to answer throughout their lives.

Kyndra Burton is a multi-media artist, primarily working in digital mediums. She is currently a B.F.A undergrad at the University of Victoria, majoring in Visual Arts and minoring in Business. Kyndra uses her practice as a conduit to tell stories and raise issues surrounding family, identity, the female experience, fear, and sexuality. With every piece, she pushes to involve herself in a socio-political discourse while placing her work in dialogue with contemporary art practices. Her work has recently been shown in Somasphere and Killjoys: An Art Show exhibitions in the Audain Gallery in Victoria, BC.
